Among the gears and structures of Brazilian law, Nelson Rosenvald is a name that stands out.

His passion for law emerged early, in his teenage years, when a friend's father, a public prosecutor, introduced him to the fascinating world of law. Since then, Nelson has carried a tireless flame, fuelled by reading — one of his greatest hobbies, alongside music and his vinyl record collection, as he likes to emphasise.

The son of Polish immigrants, Rosenvald learned early on the importance of study, language and culture. The combination of this dedication with his fascination for law shaped a scholar who became one of the foremost authorities on Civil Law in Brazil.

His taste for the legal sciences emerged immediately as a student at the traditional Law School of UERJ, where he graduated with the highest academic record in his class.

His professional path resembles a winding trail of great achievements. First, as a member of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Minas Gerais, an institution he served for more than three decades. After six years in the state capital, at the age of 28, Nelson reached the position of Procurador de Justiça (senior public prosecutor), becoming the youngest person ever to hold it in Minas Gerais — an achievement that attests to his unwavering commitment to Justice.

Yet his career was not confined to the corridors of the Prosecutor's Office. Nelson Rosenvald traced a parallel and equally brilliant path in academia. He began his journey as a Civil Law professor in 1996 and, with an insatiable appetite for knowledge, went on to earn his Master's and Doctoral degrees from PUC-SP.

It was there that Nelson explored good faith in the Civil Code and human dignity in his master's dissertation. In his doctoral thesis, he delved with originality into the subject of penalty clauses — the rediscovery of private penalties in contractual relations — always under the supervision of Renan Lotufo, the mentor Rosenvald calls "the most generous soul and one of the greatest civil law scholars Brazil has ever had".

Not satisfied, Nelson sought even deeper and broader knowledge. Between 2011 and 2018, during four sabbatical periods in Europe, he completed two postdoctoral programmes: one in Civil Law at Università Roma Tre, in Italy, and another in Corporate Law at the University of Coimbra, in Portugal. He also added to his record periods as a visiting academic at the University of Oxford (2016–2017) and as a visiting professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (2018).

This academic journey culminated in his appointment as a permanent professor in the Master's and Doctoral programmes of the Brazilian Institute of Teaching, Development and Research (IDP), in Brasília.

Throughout his career, he has given the legal world 17 works on Civil Law. His publications, true landmarks of private law, range from the seven-volume Curso de Direito Civil to books such as Código Civil Comentado, Manual de Direito Civil, Leis Civis Comentadas and Teoria Geral da Responsabilidade Civil. Each work reflects a prolific academic career and his extensive professional experience.

However, Rosenvald's journey is not limited to academia and the Prosecutor's Office. He is also the founder and President Emeritus of the Brazilian Institute for Civil Liability Studies (IBERC), created in 2017. The first institute in South America devoted exclusively to the subject, IBERC has become a reference in its field, bringing together more than 500 members, most of them holders of doctoral degrees working in civil liability. The Institute contributes to legal debate by publishing a specialised journal and by promoting conferences and seminars in Brazil and abroad. In nine years of existence, it has published 20 collective works, which have become reference reading for scholars of civil liability.

In 2023, Nelson Rosenvald began a new chapter in his professional career, dedicating himself to advisory legal practice and to the preparation of legal opinions. His experience of more than three decades at the Public Prosecutor's Office, combined with a solid academic career, allows him to bring together different perspectives in building solutions to complex private law issues. For Nelson, a legal opinion is not a merely theoretical exercise: it must offer a consistent, strategic and applicable answer to the concrete problem presented by the client.

Since then, the firm has prepared legal opinions for proceedings before the higher courts and in arbitration, serving clients from different sectors of the economy, such as retail, financial markets, manufacturing, technology, oil and gas, mining and agribusiness. Its practice covers matters related to the general theory of private law, contracts, civil liability, real estate, competition, corporate and environmental law, as well as data protection and artificial intelligence.

The firm also has a significant international practice. As an expert in Brazilian law, Nelson Rosenvald takes part in the preparation of legal opinions and expert reports for courts and arbitral tribunals abroad, including giving expert testimony and taking part in cross-examinations. This experience reinforces the firm's focus on cross-border matters and on cases that require dialogue between Brazilian law and other legal systems.

In 2024, Nelson Rosenvald took on one of the most important roles of his legal and institutional career: rapporteur for civil liability in the Commission of Jurists responsible for the review and update of the Brazilian Civil Code. His contribution is part of the reform bill currently before the National Congress and reflects decades of dedication to the study, teaching and development of Brazilian Civil Law.

Thus Nelson Rosenvald, whose life has been entirely devoted to the legal sciences, dedicates his vast knowledge and experience to resolving the most complex private law cases.

In a career marked by such an intense relationship with Civil Law, Nelson Rosenvald has become not only an interpreter of its transformations but also a protagonist of its evolution: a living chapter of Brazilian private law.
